TRANSPORTATION

Campers flying to Camp will be met at the Portland, OR airport (PDX). We will use our rental vehicles to take campers to and from the airport on arrival and departure Saturdays only.  The vans will depart the airport as they fill beginning at around 11 a.m. After retrieving your luggage please proceed to the parking garage where rental cars are available and meet in the lounge that serves the rental car companies.  Look for someone with an AMC sign.  Camp is about a 3 hour drive from the airport.  We normally make a QUICK stop somewhere en route for lunch and for people to buy whatever few supplies (i.e. happy hour provisions) they may want for Camp.

 

If you plan to use the van transportation:

  • Return the enclosed transportation form directly to Elissa Nemerofsky, transportation coordinator, at the address given on the form. DO NOT RETURN THE TRANSPORTATION FORM TO THE REGISTRAR, please.
  • Come to the rental car lounge any time between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on your arrival day so we can load vans and get you to camp as soon as possible. We try to accommodate unanticipated flight delays or schedule changes. If arriving by 3 is a problem you may need to consider arriving a day early and spending the night near the airport in Portland (also expedient in this day of lost/delayed luggage.)
  • On the day of your arrival, please call the number given below if your flight has been delayed, changed, rerouted or for other emergencies ON YOUR TRAVEL SATURDAY ONLY.  This is NOT the emergency number for Camp. (See the “All you need to know” information sheet for that number.)  On arrival Saturdays ONLY please call 212-988-1445 if there are any unforeseen changes to your flight schedule.  PLEASE KEEP THIS NUMBER OUT AND AVAILABLE ON YOUR TRAVEL DAY.
  • On your Saturday departure day we strongly encourage you to book a flight departing after 10 a.m.  If you choose to book an early morning flight you might consider booking it for Sunday morning and spending Sat. night in Portland.

 

DIRECTIONS FOR THOSE TRAVELING TO CAMP ON THEIR OWN

Camp is located at milepost 80 on Rt. 20/126 in Santiam Pass at the Hoodoo ski area, about 145 miles and 3+ hours from the Portland airport.

·        From the EAST this is about 21 miles west of the town of Sisters.  This will be the last place you can get supplies: food, gas, camping supplies.

·        From the WEST this is about 35 miles east of Detroit, the last place for supplies from that direction. 

·        From PORTLAND, OR, take 1-5 South to Salem.  Take exit 253 (Rt. 22).  Continue on Rt. 22 for about 80 miles, passing through Gates and Detroit.  Join rt. 20 (which comes in from the right) and go about 5 miles to milepost 80. 

·        The access road to Hoodoo Ski area is on the south side of the road.  Follow the road keeping to the right until you see the ski area buildings.  Look for AMC August Camp signs.

A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT OUTINGS AT THIS YEAR’S CAMP

There are various possibilities for special outings at this year’s camp:  For more info. contact Paula Burton at peburton@aol.com.

  • Fly fishing-bring your own fly fishing rod, waders or water shoes
  • Mountain biking-bring biking shorts
  • Overnights-bring a small backpacking tent
  • Trips to Crater Lake (see www.augustcamp.org for more info.) and the Mt. Hood area are likely, but there will be no summit attempts of Mt. Hood.
  • For hikes at high elevations some kind of traction device or snowshoes may be needed.

PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN THE FOLLOWING TO THE REGISTRAR NO LATER THAN JUNE 1, 2009

1._____the camper information sheet

2._____the confidential health questionnaire form (one for each member of your party)

3._____the Volunteer Managed Facilities release form (can contain multiple signatures.  Adults must sign for minors)

4._____a check for your final payment

 

PLEASE RETURN the TRANSPORTATION SHEET to the  TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR at the address given on that sheet with your COMPLETE flight schedule. Check the box at the end of the form if you want to be considered for approval as a volunteer driver at Camp.  If approved, you will receive a driver’s form to complete.

 

  • PLEASE KEEP FOR YOUR RECORDS BOTH SETS OF THE AUGUST CAMP INFORMATION SHEETS (All you need to know and specifics).  Do NOT return them to the Registrar.  You will need all of this information.  Thanks.
